Be a Sales Rocket Star with One Secret Strategy…

Everyday in the sales arena you plow through contact after contact. You research, you contact, you present and then you wait for the right time to close.

You want to know one secret strategy I used to build the top producing territory in the country? One simple action that prepared the customer for the close?

It’s so simple and so easy to do….. because it is so easy to do.

My goal was to connect with that person I meet or presented to immediately. I did not wait days or weeks to get back in touch. The follow up is operative in doing it right away.

Standing out from your competitors is difficult if you are sending company literature and the same ole presentation packages everyone else uses. You are not getting noticed.

And you know the only way to succeed in a sales gig is to be known, liked, then trusted.

For over 25 years I did one thing no one else did. It took a little discipline to do it everyday and every time I meet someone. I went back to my hotel room or my home office and hand wrote a simple note. Yes, hand written ..not typed or emailed.

Thats it. One simple message with my card inserted. Over and over again.

Now don’t tell me that because you are some macho sales guy or gal that it doesn’t work. It does. I proved it over 25 years… and I still use it today.

It works because it makes you stand out in today’s digital world even more.

Don’t do an email… today your customer’s inbox is overflowing. Your message gets ignored unless he or she opts in to get it….. so take the time to write a few simple lines.

Here’s what I did and what I said.

I carried a box of 4” x 6” small gray envelopes with matching paper. No fancy letterhead or embossed stuff. The paper was cut to fit the envelope from standard size sheets.

Because I was selling to New Car Dealers it was better to keep it simple. It helped to get noticed even more. It was light gray. The address was hand written as well. I did use a sticker with my return address…but thats all…hand written and hand stamped.

In the body of the note I would make a short comment about something I learned about them. Or it could be something that was personally mentioned.

Then I wrote something like this” Thank you for sharing some of your time with me today”

Followed it up with “ I sincerely hope I can be of service to you in the future”

Ended the note with my first name and enclosed my card.

The Hand Written Follow Up Note

This is not the place to ask for an order or go on and on about your product. You had the chance to do that in person or on the phone.

This is a note of thanks and follow-up only. No selling here.

My phone calls were answered when I called back or I got in to see them next time I visited. And yes I sent another note after everyone of those contacts.

Over and over again I did the note writing discipline. Every time my sales went up.

You can do the same thing today and become a sales rock star.

Even if you are an amature. In the beginning I was and it still worked.

I challenge you to write 100 notes to the next 100 prospects and evaluate the results.

What the worse that could happen? Spending a few cents on each envelope and some time writing a simple message. I guarantee you will see results and increased sales.

Just do it.
